Leighton Let Lead Slip Earning Themselves a Point

A first half goal by Alkali Darboe secured a point for Leighton against Uxbridge last night, with Reece Grant scoring the only goal for the away side.

Leighton had their first shot of the game five minutes in but Tegana James’ shot went just over the bar.

James went down in the box injured after colliding with Sam Gray in the 12^th minute, but seven minutes went by before the referee stopped play and allowed Lorenzo Green on to take his place.

Lewis McBride was shown a yellow card in the 24^th minute for kicking the ball away after the referee awarded Uxbridge a free kick.

Joe Nyama had a chance to score in the 31^st minute but his along the ground shot bobbled straight into Gray’s hands.

An Uxbridge corner, taken by Lewis Cole was cleared by Nyama but only as far as Luke Heneghan and Bradley Kirkwood had to punch the ball clear of danger.

Just before half time Darboe, assisted by Ben Gallant, put Leighton 1-0 up after he caught Gray out of his goal.

The second half saw Uxbridge draw level when a defensive error cost Leighton all three points, as Grant found the back of the net.

The away side could have taken the lead only moments later when Grant had another shot on target but it was cleared well by Nyama.

Abobaker Eisa ran clear of everyone in the 76^th minute and managed to cross the ball into the box, but with no one on the back post it was a wasted ball.

A double substitution for the home side saw Josh Murray and Maxwell Ibeto replaced by James Hatch and Kerran Birch.

Hatch came close to putting Leighton into the lead in the 78^th minute but his shot hit the side netting, much to everyone’s disappointment.

Grant was lucky not to get sent off in the 86^th minute as he fouled Green, having only been booked six minutes before for kicking the ball away.

In the closing minutes of the game Jordan Jenkins managed to deny Uxbridge of the winner as he cleared Eisa shot of the line.

Leighton’s next game is away to Northwood on Saturday 9^th April kick off 3pm.
